Vincenzo Calderone, Ph.D.
Scientific Advisory Board
Dr. Vincenzo Calderone is a Full Professor of Pharmacology at the Department of Pharmacy, University of Pisa (Italy). He obtained the Degree in Pharmacy at the University of Pisa (Italy) in 1993 and completed the Specialization School in Science and Technology of Medicinal Plants in 1996, at the University of Pisa.
In the period 2010-2011 he has been the applicant and Principal Investigator of the two-year research project "Pathophysiological role of H2S in the cardiovascular system: evaluation of new pharmacotherapeutic targets and development of original drugs active on H2S pathways", selected and funded by the "Regional Health Research Program - 2009" of Regione Toscana.
The scientific activity of Dr. Calderone has allowed him to gain extensive experience in several experimental fields, such as medicinal chemistry and cardiovascular pharmacology; he is the author of 120 publications on peer-reviewed international scientific journals, 5 international patents and about 100 congress communications. The study of the physiopathological roles of gasotransmiters, such as nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the cardiovascular system and of their interaction with ion channels is a prominent topic of his scientific activity, along with the discovery and development of natural and synthetic compounds acting as NO-donors or H2S-donors, or modulating the gasotransmitters' biosynthesis and activity.
